The gorgeous Nicky Opheij, who’ll be competing for the crown of Miss Universe 2017 later this year, has been modeling for three years now. She won the Hollands Next TopModel Contest in 2014. While she was doing this she always had to lose weight and centimeters – “I was unhappy and not self-confident at all. This was not who I really am. It’s important to eat (and be) healthy but the most importantly is to be happy with yourself” – she explained.
Modeling and being in front of the camera is what she loves to do. But it was not healthy for her at a highfashion level – “I reconsidered highfashion modelling because of that. I think top commercial modelling suits me and my personality better!”
This year during the Miss Netherlands adventure she has learned to be happy with herself and to be confident with herself – “Being confident with my feminine curves and the opportunity to show my personality are the two most important things I missed during modeling. Together with the Miss Netherlands experts and psychologists I’m here to love myself and my body. Now I can be a good rolemodel for those young girls and kickstart my top commercial modelling career.”
I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful Nicky a few weeks before the prestigious Miss Universe Contest – Did you know ? Holland has won Miss Universe one time; it was in 1989 with Angela Visser.
The country debuted at Miss World and Miss Universe in 1956. The national beauty pageant was called “Miss Holland” from 1950 until 1990, since that year the winner competed at the Miss Universe, while runners-up traditionally competed at the Miss World and Miss International.
You will have only one month to prepare the Miss Universe Pageant. Are you stressed about this ?
Of course.. Very excited, but also very happy because i’m feeling great and the flow and energy is great, so I know I will be totally ready for you in Las Vegas!
Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. You are very popular on it with almost 45.000 followers on Instagram. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?
I put in a lot of work and effort in social media. It’s great to have such a true following. Social Media is very important for me but also for the Miss Universe organisation. Now they already see i know how to work with it. My profile is growing exponentially and i’m looking forward to welcome new followers worldwide. My account names: @missnederland and has over 50.000. My personal account (which is resting now to focus on @missnederland account has over 50.000 as well)
Many misses have said that their dream since a child was to participate in a pageant as prestigious as Miss World (or Miss Universe). It this your case ? And if so, why ?
As a child it was my dream to become a successful model. That’s why I participated the Hollands Next Topmodel competition. After winning that in 2014 I was not happy with myself at all. That’s the reason I want to show the world how important it is to be self confident, have a good personality and great spirit. Since that moment it was my dream to win Miss Netherlands and now its my dream to win Miss Universe. I want to be a roll model for all those young girls for sure.
Do you consider yourself more as a model or as a pageant queen ?
Both! I know I’m very photogenic but I think the most people want to work with me because of my personality. And the second thing is one of the most important things for a pageant queen. Energy doesn’t lie!
How would you describe the Netherlands to your fellow contestants?
Small, 41.500 square kilomoters) no mountains, 4 seasons in extreme, Cosy, multicultural, well organised, down to earth, and a bit greedy 😉 I love my country!
Who is your ideal beauty queen and how has she helped you to evolve as a beauty queen?
Doutzen Kroes, she is my BFF in my dreams . 😉 I love her because she has the female features and a great personality. Showing her spirit and beauty all in one is what makes her hot..
